The 61st Baeksang Arts Awards wrapped up on May 5—and what a night it was for Korean film and television! Held at COEX in Seoul and hosted by the familiar trio of Shin Dong Yup, Suzy, and Park Bo Gum, the ceremony once again lived up to its reputation as one of the most respected award shows in South Korea. Netflix’s Culinary Class Wars walked away with the Grand Prize (Daesang) in the television category, making a bold statement about the rising popularity of food-themed dramas. On the film side, the top honor went to Harbin—or more specifically, to its cinematographer Hong Kyung Pyo, who took home the Grand Prize for his stunning visual work. The film also snagged Best Picture, proving it’s not just a critical darling but a technical masterpiece as well.
Meanwhile, When Life Gives You Tangerines was one of the night’s biggest winners in the TV category, picking up multiple major awards including Best Drama, Best Screenplay, and both Best Supporting Actor and Actress. It was clearly a fan and critic favorite this season.
